Time is Money
How can other online brokerage firms offer such low commissions? Simple. Usually they receive a rebate for each trade or share sent to a market-making firm for execution under a practice called payment-for-order-flow. These rebates help subsidize the rock-bottom commissions charged by these online brokerage firms. This arrangement raises some questions about whether online brokerages are always seeking out the best price for their customers' orders.
Execution delays could also be encountered by sending your order to another firm for execution. It takes time for the order to go to your online broker then onto the market-making firm for execution. For example, you submit a market order to sell 500 shares of ABCD with your $10.00 online broker. You know that ABCD can move very fast so getting a quick execution is a priority. If it only moves 1/4-point from the time you submitted your order, you are lucky. Even at 1/4-point movement you are talking about a $125.00 difference. Sure enough, the stock moved against you 1/4-point before your order was filled. Now, how much did you actually save going with the lower commission rate? The ECN's our software uses will provide you Direct Access to the market. It will search market makers and other ECNs for the best available price all under YOUR control.

Nasdaq Stop Orders
Nasdaq stop orders are held on the servers, giving traders unprecedented flexibility. Set your price, route stops and stop limits via Archipelago, and our system will activate the order as soon as the stop is hit, even if you are no longer online.

Level II
Watch the Nasdaq market makers bid and offer (see the supply and demand) in real-time. These windows display all the market makers' prices on a given stock along with recent trades. Level II works for listed stocks as well, displaying entire quotes including regional exchanges.
