Daryl Guppy

This is a self-serving account of the Barings disaster. It is useful because it shows the ultimate consequences of poor trading techniques and what happens when stop loss methods are abandoned. He makes a convincing case for lack of adequate supervision from England, but overstates the level of blame attached to his superiors in Singapore and elsewhere. The Singapore Monetary Authority is the only group that retains any credibility. Don't read this for the facts - they lie somewhere between this account and the story in Going For Broke. Read this to appreciate how poor planning and risk control coupled with averaging down techniques brings catastrophic results.
